AI Photo Culling for High-Volume Photography

# 4,000 photos. Client wants selects *in two hours.*

DeepCull is FilterPixel's genre-based AI photo culling mode for Mac and Windows.

DeepCull scores every photo in a shoot across ten criteria, picks the strongest frames, automatically groups each burst, and can export your keepers to edit directly inside the app in a single workflow, or to Lightroom Classic with star ratings applied. It sorts unique and duplicate photos automatically too. It handles up to 5,500 photos per event, and your original RAW files never leave your computer.

Unlike basic AI culling and editing tools that primarily evaluate technical issues such as blur, focus and blinks, DeepCull uses genre-specific AI models to evaluate the context and quality of each photograph. Including expressions, peak action, storytelling moments, creativity, moment timing, narrative clarity and more.

DeepCull currently supports 26+ genres, each with its own 10 scoring criteria, with every selection accompanied by a score and explanation so photographers can understand why an image was selected.

Speed

## Built for photographers who work *against the clock*

DeepCull is designed for deadline-driven workflow: import, choose your genre, set your target count, let the AI score, review, and edit inside the app. DeepCull scores the images in minutes, surfaces the strongest photographs and lets you review the AI's decisions before exporting your selects. Same-day delivery becomes possible.

### How fast is DeepCull? A 2,000-image shoot is scored in 5 minutes

Manual culling of 2,000 photos typically takes several hours of continuous review. DeepCull scores the same shoot in 5 minutes.

For a typical 1,500–3,000-image conference shoot, DeepCull completes AI scoring in 5 minutes. You then spend approximately 10–15 minutes reviewing the AI's picks before starting to edit.

| Workflow stage | DeepCull |

| Import | Import your photo folder, or import from Lightroom |
| AI scoring | 2,000 images scored in 5 minutes |
| Review | Approximately 10–15 minutes spot-checking |

How DeepCull works

## Four steps. Minutes, not hours.

Step 1

### Import

Drop your folder or import from Lightroom.DeepCull supports RAW including NEF, CR3/CR2, ARW, RAF, ORF, RW2 and DNG, plus JPG, HEIC and PSD. Up to 5,500 photos per event, or up to 1,000 per project on the free trial.

Step 2

### Set up

Choose your genre  conferences, sports, concerts, high-volume events and set your target photo count. For example, 2,345 photos → 150 selects. DeepCull uses that target to surface the strongest photographs for delivery.

Step 3

### AI culls

A genre-specific model scores every photograph across 10 criteria, identifies and groups similar frames and picks the strongest from each burst. The ten criteria are specific to your genre.

Step 4

### AI edit

Apply an Expert Profile to edit your selects automatically. AI-trained editing styles apply consistent exposure, white balance and colour across your selections. Review, adjust, and export ready for delivery.

Works with Lightroom Classic on Mac and Windows

Capacity

## What if your shoot is larger than 5,500 photos?

DeepCull's genre models score up to 5,500 photos per event. Larger shoots aren't a dead end — you have two options.

Option 1

### Split the shoot

Option 2

### Run Basic Cull instead

FilterPixel's Basic Cull handles larger volumes using technical scoring — blur, focus and blink detection — without the genre-specific editorial analysis.

**Note:** when used during the trial period, splitting a shoot will consume multiple trial projects.

Privacy

## Does DeepCull upload your photos to the cloud?

No. *Your original RAW files never leave your computer.*

DeepCull uses a hybrid architecture. When you import a shoot, DeepCull generates a low-resolution preview of each image on your own machine. Only those lightweight previews are sent to FilterPixel's cloud for AI scoring. Your full-resolution RAW files stay on your drive the entire time — they are never uploaded, never stored on FilterPixel's servers, and never shared or sold.

This is what makes DeepCull both fast and safe to use on client work. Culling tools that upload full RAW files need you to push tens of gigabytes over venue wifi before you get a single select back. DeepCull sends a fraction of that, so cloud-scale AI scoring finishes in minutes while the images themselves never leave your possession.

DeepCull also never deletes anything. It selects and star-rates your strongest frames for review. Your original files are never touched, moved or removed. The AI is a first pass, not a final decision.

FilterPixel is GDPR and CCPA compliant

What DeepCull evaluates

## AI culling that goes beyond *technical quality.*

A photograph can be technically sharp and still not be the photograph you want to deliver. For high-volume event photography, context matters.

DeepCull's genre-specific models are designed to account for those differences.

#### A great conference photograph

An engaged speaker · a responsive audience · clear brand visibility · a strong moment · clean framing

#### A great sports photograph

Peak action · subject sharpness · athlete expression · strong timing

Transparent scoring

## Ten criteria. *One transparent decision.*

DeepCull evaluates every photograph across 10 criteria tailored to your photography genre. The criteria and their importance change depending on what matters most for the type of shoot — because a strong sports photograph is judged differently from a conference, concert, or high-volume event photograph.

Each image receives individual scores across these 10 criteria, rather than a single unexplained AI score. DeepCull also provides plain-language reasons for its decisions.

Speaker engaged with audience Sharp on subject Brand-safe framing Best of burst

This gives you a transparent view of why a photograph was selected and what the AI considered important for your genre.

![DeepCull detail panel scoring one photo across the ten criteria defined for its genre, with a reason for the selection](https://filterpixel.com/hubfs/deepcull/deepcull-02-scoring-panel.png "DeepCull detail panel scoring one photo across the ten criteria defined for its genre, with a reason for the selection")

DeepCull vs basic AI photo culling

## Technical problems aren't the *whole picture.*

Basic AI culling identifies technical faults — blur, focus issues, blinks. It answers “is this photo broken?” DeepCull answers a harder question: “is this the photo you'd choose?” It adds genre and context to the selection process, then tells you why it picked what it picked.

Genre intelligence

## Different genres. *Different definitions of great.*

Different types of photography require different definitions of a “great” photograph. A strong sports image isn't judged the same way as a conference photo or a concert moment.

DeepCull uses genre-specific AI models to evaluate photographs according to the context in which they were captured. Each of the 12+ supported genres has its own set of 10 scoring criteria and priorities, so the AI can focus on what matters most for that type of shoot.

#### Conferences & corporate events

Speaker presence, audience engagement, panel moments, brand-safe framing and meaningful storytelling.

#### Sports photography

Peak action, athlete expression, motion sharpness, decisive moments and maximum-effort plays.

#### Concerts & live events

Stage lighting, artist energy, crowd reactions, performance moments and compelling compositions.

#### High-volume events

Consistent selections across large photo sets, strong storytelling, duplicate detection and fast turnaround for deadline-driven delivery.

Audience

## Who is DeepCull for?

DeepCull is built for photographers who can't afford to spend hours manually reviewing every frame.

#### Conference photographers

You need selects ready for marketing teams while the event is still fresh.

#### Sports photographers

You return with thousands of action frames and need the strongest moments quickly.

#### Event photographers

Your client needs a gallery while the event is still being discussed online.

#### Concert photographers

You need the strongest performance and crowd moments from a high-volume shoot.

#### High-volume photographers

You regularly shoot thousands of photographs and need a repeatable way to reduce them to a manageable set.

### Who might not need DeepCull?

DeepCull is designed around high-volume, deadline-driven workflows. If you only shoot a few hundred images per project, or prefer to make every selection entirely manually, a dedicated AI culling workflow may not add as much value.

If your primary workflow is wedding photography, compare DeepCull with wedding-focused culling tools to determine which genre model best fits your work.

And if you need to cull with no internet connection at all, DeepCull isn't the right fit — AI scoring runs in the cloud, so a connection is required.

FilterPixel vs Aftershoot vs Narrative Select vs Photo Mechanic

## Different tools are designed around *different workflows.*

Aftershoot and Narrative Select are built primarily for wedding and portrait photographers working large, face-forward galleries with a predictable structure. Photo Mechanic is a manual browser — extremely fast at loading and flagging frames, but every selection decision is still yours, one frame at a time. FilterPixel automates the selection itself for conference, sports, concert and high-volume event work, and attaches a score and a reason to every pick.

Burst sequences

## Don't choose between 15 nearly identical frames *manually.*

Burst detection is part of FilterPixel DeepCull's scoring workflow. The AI identifies groups of near-identical photographs, evaluates every frame in the group and surfaces the strongest image. Selected photographs are marked **Keepers**, so you can quickly understand why one frame was chosen over similar alternatives.

![DeepCull burst detection grouping eight near-identical frames and marking the strongest as Best of Burst](https://filterpixel.com/hs-fs/hubfs/deepcull/deepcull-04-burst-cluster.png?width=2000&height=1000&name=deepcull-04-burst-cluster.png "DeepCull burst detection grouping eight near-identical frames and marking the strongest as Best of Burst")

Your files

## Does DeepCull delete your photos?

No. *DeepCull does not delete your original photographs.*

It selects and star/colour rates or tags your images so you can review the AI's choices before exporting them to continue editing. Your original files remain under your control, on your own machine.

DeepCull and Lightroom

## Designed to fit the workflow photographers *already use.*

FilterPixel's DeepCull exports selected photographs with star ratings and metadata, so you can open Lightroom Classic, filter by the relevant star rating and continue with your normal editing workflow. Works with Lightroom Classic on Mac & Windows.

![Lightroom Classic library filtered by star rating, showing selects exported from DeepCull with ratings applied](https://filterpixel.com/hs-fs/hubfs/deepcull/deepcull-05-lightroom-export.png?width=2000&height=1250&name=deepcull-05-lightroom-export.png "Lightroom Classic library filtered by star rating, showing selects exported from DeepCull with ratings applied")

Compatibility

## What file formats does DeepCull support?

DeepCull supports major RAW formats including NEF (Nikon), CR3 / CR2 (Canon), ARW (Sony), RAF (Fujifilm), ORF (Olympus), RW2 (Panasonic) and DNG. It also supports HEIC, PSD and JPG.

“

FilterPixel has completely transformed my workflow as a photographer. What used to take me hours—sometimes even days—can now be done in a fraction of the time.

The culling is surprisingly accurate, especially for events and large shoots. It does a great job identifying sharp images, removing duplicates, and flagging the best moments. Of course, I still do a quick final pass, but it cuts down my workload massively.

What impressed me the most is the AI editing. After training it with my style, the results were incredibly consistent and close to what I would normally deliver. It’s not just a generic preset—it actually adapts to your look.

The interface is clean, fast, and easy to integrate into my existing workflow with Lightroom. No steep learning curve, which is a huge plus.

Overall, FilterPixel is a must-have tool for photographers who want to save time without sacrificing quality. Highly recommended!

“

I’ve used FilterPixel, Narrative, Imagen and Aftershoot, for sports photography, FilterPixel stands out. The deep culling does a great job identifying key moments — especially shots with the ball, clear faces, and real action — which is exactly what you need for sports.

Being able to easily pick the top X number of photos is a feature I have been wanting forever, and it makes the workflow much more efficient now that I have it. Definitely worth trying if you shoot sports. The only thing that can make it better if I can group by players to pick the best.

FAQ

## Frequently asked questions

What is DeepCull?

DeepCull is FilterPixel's genre-based AI photo culling software for Mac and Windows. It evaluates photographs using genre-specific models designed for conferences, events, sports and concerts, scores each image across ten criteria, and provides a reason for every selection. It handles up to 5,500 photos per event and exports selects to Lightroom Classic with star ratings.

Is FilterPixel free?

FilterPixel's free trial includes 3 complete DeepCull projects with up to 1,000 photos in each. No credit card is required, and there is no time limit — the trial ends when you have used your three projects rather than after a countdown. The free projects include the full feature set: all twelve genre models, all ten scoring criteria, burst detection, and AI editing and Lightroom Classic export with star ratings.

How many photos can I cull for free?

Up to 1,000 photos in each of your 3 free projects.

How many photos can DeepCull process?

DeepCull's genre models score up to 5,500 photos per event. For larger shoots you can run FilterPixel's Basic Cull, which handles higher volumes using technical scoring, or DeepCull will split the shoot across multiple projects and score each one.

What happens if my shoot is larger than 5,500 photos?

You have two options. Run Basic Cull, which handles larger volumes using blur, focus and blink detection without the genre-specific editorial analysis. Or stay in DeepCull, and it will automatically divide the shoot into multiple projects and score each one.

Does DeepCull upload my photos to the cloud?

Your original RAW files never leave your computer. DeepCull generates a low-resolution preview of each image on your own machine and sends only those previews to FilterPixel's cloud for AI scoring. Your full-resolution originals are never uploaded, never stored on FilterPixel's servers, and never shared or sold. FilterPixel is GDPR and CCPA compliant.

Does DeepCull work offline?

No. AI scoring runs in FilterPixel's cloud, so an internet connection is required. What does not require a connection is your photo library — only low-resolution previews are transmitted, never your original RAW files.

Does DeepCull delete my photos?

No. DeepCull selects and star-rates photographs for review. Your original photographs are never deleted, moved or altered.

What makes FilterPixel different from Aftershoot, Narrative Select or Imagen?

Aftershoot, Narrative Select and Imagen are built primarily for wedding and portrait photographers. FilterPixel is designed around genre-specific culling for high-volume, deadline-driven photography — weddings, conferences, sports, concerts and live events. It uses separate models per genre, scores every photo across ten criteria and includes burst detection. The best culling tool depends on your genre, image volume, delivery requirements and editing workflow.

How does FilterPixel compare to Photo Mechanic?

Photo Mechanic is a manual browser built for speed of ingestion — it loads frames very fast, but every selection decision is still made by you. FilterPixel's DeepCull mode automates the selection itself: it scores every photo, picks the best frame from each burst, and hands you a ranked set to approve. Photo Mechanic makes manual culling faster; DeepCull removes most of the manual culling.

How fast is FilterPixel?

For a typical shoot of 2,000 images, FilterPixel completes AI scoring in 5 minutes. You then spend approximately 10–15 minutes reviewing the AI's picks before exporting the selections to Lightroom. Actual processing time varies by project size, hardware, connection speed and workflow.

What does FilterPixel score?

FilterPixel evaluates photographs across ten criteria, depending on the genre.

How does FilterPixel select the best photo from a burst?

FilterPixel identifies groups of near-identical frames, scores every photograph in the group and surfaces the strongest image using its burst selection.

Does FilterPixel work with Lightroom?

Yes. FilterPixel exports selected photographs with star ratings so they can be filtered and edited in Lightroom Classic, on Mac and Windows.

Does FilterPixel work on Mac?

Yes. FilterPixel runs on both macOS and Windows and integrates with Lightroom Classic on both platforms. Star ratings and selects export identically on either operating system.

What file formats does DeepCull support?

DeepCull supports major RAW formats including NEF, CR3/CR2, ARW, RAF, ORF, RW2 and DNG, along with JPG, HEIC and PSD.
