**Quick answer:** a cruise photo package is a prepaid bundle of the professional photos taken on board. It is sold per stateroom and costs less before sailing than on the ship. On Carnival and Royal Caribbean, guests cannot buy once the cruise is over. That deadline is where most cruise and resort photo sales stop.

This guide explains how cruise photo packages work, what the lines publish about prices and deadlines, and how guests find their photos on board today. It then shows how a cruise or resort photo team can replace the gallery, the kiosks and most of the printing with AI on the guest's own phone.

- **Sold per stateroom,** with a discount for buying before the cruise.
- **Bought on board.** Two of the three lines covered here do not sell after the cruise.
- **Found at a gallery.** Print racks on older ships, key-card screens on newer ones.
- **The alternative:** one selfie at check-in, and every photo of the guest arrives in an album on their phone.

## How cruise photo packages work

Ship photographers work the gangway, the dining room, the atrium and formal night. The photos go on show in a gallery on board. A guest can buy single photos there, or buy a package that covers many or all of them. Three rules shape almost every package.

### They are sold per stateroom

[Royal Caribbean](https://www.royalcaribbean.com/faq/topics/cruise-photo) says a photo account holds photos that include at least one member of the purchasing stateroom, and it accommodates families in more than one stateroom where the other occupants are the purchaser's children aged 21 and under. [Margaritaville at Sea](https://www.margaritavilleatsea.com/current-offers/picture-perfect-photo-package) states that a package may not be shared with guests travelling in other staterooms, even if they are travelling together.

### They cost less before the cruise

When [Carnival introduced its Pixels packages in 2018](https://cruiseradio.net/carnival-cruise-photo-pricing), Cruise Radio reported three tiers at $99.99, $199.99 and $249.99 before the cruise, rising to $119.98, $239.98 and $299.98 on embarkation day. [Disney Cruise Line](https://disneycruise.disney.go.com/featured/photo-packages/) advertises a discount off the onboard price for booking its unlimited package in advance. One Royal Caribbean guest writing at [My Cruise Stories](https://mycruisestories.com/2024/11/22/the-photo-package/) paid less than half the onboard price by buying a 100-photo package before sailing.

### They exclude the special occasions

[Carnival's Pixels terms](https://www.carnival.com/pixels-photo-packages) exclude large group photos, weddings, vow renewals and other special events from its packages. Margaritaville at Sea excludes private sessions, weddings and special events.

## How much is a cruise photo package?

Lines change prices by ship and season, and most do not publish a single list. These are the figures we could read at the source:

| Line | Package | Published price | Source |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Margaritaville at Sea | All-digital photo package | From $35.99 | [Line's offer page](https://www.margaritavilleatsea.com/current-offers/picture-perfect-photo-package) |
| Margaritaville at Sea | 2 prints | $39.99 | [Line's offer page](https://www.margaritavilleatsea.com/current-offers/picture-perfect-photo-package) |
| Margaritaville at Sea | 5 prints and 5 digital images | $149.99 | [Line's offer page](https://www.margaritavilleatsea.com/current-offers/picture-perfect-photo-package) |
| Carnival | Pixels | $99.99 before the cruise, $119.98 on board | [Cruise Radio, 2018](https://cruiseradio.net/carnival-cruise-photo-pricing) |
| Carnival | Pixels Plus | $199.99 before, $239.98 on board | [Cruise Radio, 2018](https://cruiseradio.net/carnival-cruise-photo-pricing) |
| Carnival | Pixels Plus Digital | $249.99 before, $299.98 on board | [Cruise Radio, 2018](https://cruiseradio.net/carnival-cruise-photo-pricing) |

The Carnival figures are from 2018, so check the line's own site for current prices. For comparison on land, [Cedar Point lists its FunPix photo pass](https://sixflags.com/cedarpoint/add-ons) at $34.99 for a single day and $69 for a season. Our guide to [theme park photography](https://filterpixel.com/blog/theme-park-photography-ride-photos) covers how parks sell those passes.

## Can you buy cruise photos after the cruise?

This is the rule that matters most to the people running the photo operation. The lines publish it themselves:

| Cruise line | Where guests view and collect | After the cruise |
| --- | --- | --- |
| [Carnival (Pixels)](https://www.carnival.com/pixels-photo-packages) | The Pixels Photo Gallery on board. Photos must be redeemed during the cruise | Photos cannot be redeemed after the cruise. Files are deleted soon after each cruise |
| [Royal Caribbean](https://www.royalcaribbean.com/faq/topics/cruise-photo) | The Photo Gallery on board, then a cloud download | No purchases after the cruise. Purchased photos stay online for 30 days |
| [Disney Cruise Line](https://disneycruise.disney.go.com/featured/photo-packages/) | Purchased photos are stored in My Cruise Photos | Stored for 45 days from the date taken. Only US residents can buy afterwards, at higher prices |

## How guests find their photos on board

For years the answer was a wall. Photographers shot, the lab printed, and the prints went on racks for guests to search. Newer ships have changed the display but not the trip to see it. A guest who sailed on Quantum of the Seas describes it at [My Cruise Stories](https://mycruisestories.com/2024/11/22/the-photo-package/): the walls of racks full of photos have been replaced by a room full of computer monitors, which guests unlock with their key card.

Either way the guest has to go to one room, on one deck, during opening hours, to find out whether a photo of them exists.

## Where cruise and resort photo sales stop

### The sale ends at the gangway

On two of the three lines above, a guest who did not buy on board cannot buy at all. Every photo taken of that guest was a cost with no chance of a later sale.

### Guests have to find themselves first

A gallery only sells photos that guests go and look for. Guests who never visit never see what was taken.

### The best moments are far from the gallery

The excursion, the pool and the sunset table are where guests are happiest. The gallery is where they go on the last evening, when they are packing.

### The stateroom rule splits groups

Friends and grandparents in other cabins fall outside the package, so the group photo everyone wanted belongs to one stateroom's account.

### The equipment is fixed and so is the print bill

Photo operations run on order stations and print stations. As a guide to that class of equipment, [The Pricer's review of Kodak photo kiosks](https://www.thepricer.org/kodak-kiosk-cost/) puts a new order station at about $7,000, a complete setup with printers at $7,000 to $20,000 or more, and media at about 16.7 cents for each 4×6 print. Marine and resort systems are specified differently, but every print made for a guest who never buys is still paid for.

## Resorts have the same problem on land

A resort photo desk in the lobby works like a ship's gallery. Photographers cover the pool, the beach club and dinner, and guests are expected to visit a counter to see the results. The reef trip and the kids' club are a long way from that counter, and the sale ends when the guest checks out. Excursion operators have it harder still, because their guests are back on the bus before any photo can be shown.

## Replacing the gallery with AI

The alternative keeps your photographers and removes the hardware between the photo and the guest.

1. **One selfie at check-in.** The guest scans a code at the front desk, the terminal or in the pre-arrival email, and takes a selfie in the phone's browser. There is no app.
2. **Photographers shoot as usual.** They use the cameras they own. Guides on excursions shoot on a phone, and photos sync when the phone is back in range.
3. **AI picks the frame and finds the guest.** The best frame of each burst is kept, using the same [DeepCull](https://filterpixel.com/deepcull) selection photographers rely on for [same-day delivery](https://filterpixel.com/blog/same-day-photo-delivery-workflow). Face matching adds it to the album of every opted-in guest who is in it.
4. **The album is on the phone that afternoon.** Guests buy one photo, one day or the whole stay from wherever they are.
5. **The album stays open after checkout.** It stays online for 12 months by default, with a reminder before it closes.

| The job | Gallery and kiosk operation | AI on phones |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Knowing whose photo it is | Cabin folders, key cards, a search at the gallery | One selfie, or a family code |
| Showing guests their photos | A gallery of prints or viewing stations | A private album on the guest's phone |
| Groups across cabins or rooms | Split by stateroom | Each person in the photo gets it in their own album |
| Ordering | A counter or kiosk, in opening hours | The guest's phone, at any time |
| Prints | Printed in advance for display | Printed to order on a printer you own, or posted home |
| After the trip | Files deleted or a short download window | The album stays open and can still sell |
| Adding a ship or property | Ship, install and maintain equipment | Log in and print a new code |

This is the model behind FilterPixel's [resort and cruise photo system](https://filterpixel.com/resort-photo-system). The same engine runs the [guest photo platform](https://filterpixel.com/guest-photo-platform) for [theme parks](https://filterpixel.com/theme-park-photo-system), [zoos and aquariums](https://filterpixel.com/zoo-photo-system), [museums](https://filterpixel.com/museum-photo-system) and [observation decks](https://filterpixel.com/observation-deck-photo-system).

**Where this stands today.** Best-frame selection, branded albums opened by QR code or selfie, and sharing run today at conferences and brand events through [FilterPixel Live](https://filterpixel.com/live-event-photo-delivery). The visit-long album, tablet photo spots, camera feeds, destination scenes, checkout, prints and the operator console are opening with our founding venues for the 2026–27 season. We have no venue results to publish yet, so this article quotes other people's published prices and none of our own.

## What a photo operation saves

These are the cost lines the model removes. The print figures use the 16.7 cents per 4×6 quoted above.

| Cost line | What it costs today | With albums on phones |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Display prints, 1,000 | About $167 in media | Printed only when ordered |
| Display prints, 5,000 | About $835 in media | Printed only when ordered |
| Display prints, 20,000 | About $3,340 in media | Printed only when ordered |
| Each order station | About $7,000 new, on kiosk-class pricing | The guest's own phone |
| Gallery floor space | Retail space on a deck or in a lobby | Free for other use |
| Sales after departure | None on Carnival or Royal Caribbean | Open for 12 months by default |

Media cost excludes paper waste, labour and the printers themselves. What the model saves in your operation depends on your print volumes and equipment contracts, which is why we ask for those numbers before quoting. This article does not quote a FilterPixel price.

### Five questions to ask about your current photo operation

1. What share of guests visit the gallery or photo desk at least once?
2. How many prints are made for display each week, and how many of those are sold?
3. What happens to a guest's photos the day after they leave?
4. How many excursion and off-property photos never reach a screen the guest sees?
5. Who owns the equipment, and what share of each sale does a concession keep?

## Guest privacy and children

Finding photos by selfie is opt-in and for adults only. Guests who prefer not to use it get the same album with a code. Children are never matched by face; their photos join the family album through an adult or a code. Any guest can delete their album and face data from their phone. Rules on face data differ by country and state, including under [Article 9 of the GDPR](https://gdpr-info.eu/art-9-gdpr/), so confirm the setup for each property with your own counsel.

## Frequently asked questions

### Are cruise photo packages worth it?

For guests it depends on how many photos they want, because packages are sold per stateroom and cost less before sailing than on board. For operators the bigger issue is timing: on most lines the sale has to happen before the guest disembarks.

### How much is a cruise photo package?

It varies by line and ship. Margaritaville at Sea lists packages from $35.99 for all-digital and $149.99 for five prints with five digital images. When Carnival launched its Pixels packages in 2018, Cruise Radio reported three tiers from $99.99 to $249.99 before the cruise.

### Can you buy cruise photos after the cruise?

Often not. Carnival states that photos cannot be redeemed after the cruise and files are deleted soon after it ends. Royal Caribbean states that it does not currently offer purchases after the cruise. Disney Cruise Line allows US residents to buy afterwards at higher prices.

### How long are cruise photos kept?

Royal Caribbean keeps purchased photos online for 30 days after the cruise ends. Disney Cruise Line stores photos in My Cruise Photos for 45 days from the date each photo was taken.

### Can a photo package cover more than one stateroom?

Usually only for children. Royal Caribbean accommodates families in more than one stateroom where the other occupants are the purchaser's children aged 21 and under. Margaritaville at Sea says a package may not be shared with guests in other staterooms.

### How do guests find their photos on a cruise ship?

At a gallery on board. Older ships display prints on racks; newer ships such as Quantum of the Seas use a room of screens that guests unlock with their key card.

### How do resorts and cruise lines deliver photos without a photo gallery?

Guests opt in with one selfie at check-in or embarkation. Every photo a ship or resort photographer takes of them is then added to a private album on their own phone, where they can buy a photo, a day or the whole stay.

### Are children matched by face?

Not with FilterPixel. One adult opts in and the family shares an album; children are added by code.

## Sell the photo while the guest is still on holiday

Cruise photo packages work when guests find their photos and decide in time. Putting each guest's photos on their own phone, during the trip and for a year after it, removes the search and the deadline.
